The
History of Tear Mender
The
discovery of Tear Mender dates back to the mid-1930s.
Val Cismoski observed a definite need for a durable, flexible,
wash-proof and non-toxic adhesive in the scientifically
advancing agricultural industry of his day. Several years
of work and experimentation went into perfecting this bonding
formula. Painstaking determination and attention to detail
did allow him to perfect the formula and manufacturing process.
In 1938 this unique bonding product was introduced under
the name "Tehr-Greeze".
In
agriculture it became a staple for most of the farm homes
in all the grain producing states for use on leather drive
belts, burlap grain bags, farm machinery, rubberizing gloves
for hi-bred seed processing and repairing work clothes.
In
commercial applications it became a basic component for
production, repair and maintenance of a wide range of items
such as venetian blinds, leather and fabric upholstery,
auto seats and convertible soft tops, marine and boat covers,
recreational tents, outdoor furniture and awnings.
Industrial
uses were developed and perfected for the full range of
industrial fabrics, geo-textile fabrics, and the ever-growing
field of acrylic fiber fabrics.
For
its first forty years, this unique bonding formula carried
the equally unique name of "Tehr-Greeze". This
name came from Val Cismoski's phonetic take-off on the Polish
word for tiger (TYGRYS). In Val's eyes, Tehr-Greeze®
held like a tiger, which it did and still does.
In
the early 1970s, Val could see that more and more consumers
were becoming aware of this industrial and commercially
successful bonding formula and that a more user-friendly
name should be incorporated. In 1978 it was decided that
this miracle in a bottle would be re-branded as Tear Mender.
From
that time to the present, Tear Mender has maintained
its agricultural, commercial and industrial markets but
with a new found emphasis given to development of the consumer
market. In the early 1990s and again in 2002, enhancements
were made to packaging that better informed the user of
Tear Mender's unique, almost miraculous capability
to bring new life to worn or discarded items. So user-friendly
is Tear Mender that it can be applied with a person's
finger. That application will yield a permanent, wash-proof
and non-toxic bond. At the same time, Tear Mender
will easily and harmlessly rub off the user's finger without
any residue at all. In fact, Tear Mender does not
bond to any solid surfaces, but does permanently bond to
any material it can penetrate.
A real
spike in consumer awareness for Tear Mender ("the
sewing kit in a bottle") came about though its very
successful presentations on QVC. The live, on-air demonstrations
of Tear Mender continue to be presented by QVC and
QVC/United Kingdom generating thousands of orders each airing.
Now the international presence of Tear Mender, private
label products, and the introduction of Tear Mender SOLID
blend-to-bond epoxy have escalated interest in Tear
Mender Adhesive Products worldwide.
